Beau’s line

Beau’s lines are linear depressions that occur in the direction of diagonal across the fingernail. They can occur after illness, trauma to the nail, and with malnutrition.

Transverse or slanting lines or grooves across the fingernails; transverse depressions in the nail plate. Beau’s lines are caused by temporary cessation of cell division in the proximal nail matrix.

Beau’s lines disorder may be caused by trauma, illness, malnutrition or any major metabolic condition, chemotherapy or other damaging event, and is the result of any interruption in the protein formation of the nail plate.

  • Your nail will begin to turn yellowish, thick or crumbling.
  • You will suffer pain along the margins of and inside the toenail.
  • Discoloration underneath the nail may occur as a result of secondary infection.

Beau’s lines Remedies

  • Wash your feet including your nails regularly, and dry them thoroughly when they get wet.
  • Don’t wear nail polish on the toes because it can seal in fungus.
  • Stop nail biting, picking, and tearing, stop these behaviors to avoid nail abnormalities. Get psychological help or encouragement to stop as needed.
  • Apply a moisturizer on nails each time when you wash your hands or feet.
  • For brittle nails, keep the nails short and avoid nail polish.
  • Use an emollient (skin softening) cream after washing or bathing.
  • Trim brittle nails regularly.
